If you've spent any time in Plaza Midwood recently, you've probably noticed the surge of construction happening around the neighborhood. The Commonwealth Development: A Game-Changer for Plaza Midwood
The Commonwealth Development: A Game-Changer for Plaza Midwood

At the corner of Central Avenue and Pecan, the Commonwealth development is set to become the most significant change to Plaza Midwood in 75 years. This ambitious project is bringing new life to the area, and one of the most exciting additions is Uchi, a renowned Japanese restaurant from James Beard award-winning chef Tyson Cole. Uchi, which has been a staple in Austin for over two decades, is known for its nontraditional approach to Japanese cuisine, offering an extensive menu that includes daily specials, sushi, hot and cold plates, and a dedicated vegetarian selection.

The restaurant will be located on the first floor of the historic building at Central and Commonwealth, which dates back to 1912 and is currently undergoing a complete renovation. The building’s original masonry has been beautifully preserved, and Uchi will feature a massive patio right on the plaza, decked out with Japanese decor that promises to make it one of the most stylish dining spots in Charlotte. Plus, rumor has it that Uchi will boast one of the city’s most impressive rooftop patios, offering sweeping views of the vibrant neighborhood below.

Taco Dreams and Historic Charm on Central Avenue

Further down Central Avenue, there’s buzz about a new taco shop—possibly called Midwood Taco—taking over the historic building next to neighborhood favorite Moo & Brew. This little building, which has a quirky, nostalgic vibe reminiscent of the Thirsty Beaver, is being preserved with its original façade intact, ensuring it continues to fit right in with the neighborhood’s character. You might remember this spot as a smoothie or smoke shop, but it’s now set to become one of the cutest eateries in town after a full renovation. Plaza Midwood’s dining scene is about to get even better!

Shifting our focus to The Plaza, the former Segen Food Mart has been the subject of much speculation. Word on the street is that the creative minds behind Intermezzo Pizzeria are transforming the space into a chic pasta and provisions bodega, complete with outdoor seating and lush green spaces. While nothing is confirmed yet, the prospect of a cozy, Italian-inspired spot in historic Plaza Midwood has us already dreaming of al fresco dinners and neighborhood gatherings.

On the corner of Parkwood and The Plaza, the historic Plaza Presbyterian Church is entering a new chapter as the Arts+ Charlotte Community Campus. Back in February 2024, Arts+ signed a 50-year lease, marking the start of an exciting era for art and music education in Plaza Midwood. With a mission to unlock artistic potential and foster lifelong skills, Arts+ offers everything from private lessons to outreach programs, classes, and camps. This new community hub is set to be a vibrant space where creativity thrives, and we can’t wait to see how it enriches the lives of Plaza Midwood residents and beyond.
